Good to know
WHAT DO MY MICROBES DO FOR ME?
You have distinct microbiomes in your gut, your skin, your oral cavity, your airways and (if you’re female) your vagina. In all these sites, your microbes protect you from invading pathogenic microbes by competitive exclusion. This means that they occupy all the space and consume all the available food so that invaders can’t colonize.
In your gut, your resident microbes metabolize drugs, digest lactose, make essential amino acids, break down fibre, and make vitamins. Your gut microbiome largely determines whether or not you are overweight and influences your mood by producing a kind of endogenous valium.
Your microbiome also modulates your immune system and metabolizes toxins so that they can be excreted.
WHAT DO MY MICROBES DO FOR MY SKIN?
In your skin, your microbes produce Hyaluronic Acid and other moisturising factors, modulate barrier function and immune response, maintain the skin’s pH, and help to shape the skin ecology by producing anti-microbial peptides.
You wear your microbes like living armour that protects you from invading pathogens.
Calm, healthy skin not only looks better but also ages slower than skin that is constantly in a state of low-level inflammation.
Probiotics can help to shift the microbiome to a healthy, balanced state.
WHAT PROBIOTICS DO TO YOUR SKIN?
1. PROTECT YOU FROM PATHOGENS (LIKE ARMOUR FOR YOUR FACE)
Probiotics protect your skin from pathogens. They can form a layer and use all the available nutrients so that opportunistic pathogens can’t colonise. They also produce anti-microbial peptides that make life really tough for incoming bad guys.
2. MANUFACTURE MOISTURISING FACTORS LIKE HYALURONIC ACID
Probiotic bacteria produce hyaluronic acid which is an intensely moisturising active that naturally holds moisture in your skin. They have also been shown to decrease Trans Epidermal Water Loss and improve skin hydration by improving barrier functioning skin.
3. MAINTAIN SKIN pH (VERY IMPORTANT, DON’T MESS WITH pH)
Many probiotics produce Lactic acid and other acids that keep your skin’s pH in the optimal range – 4,5 to 5. As we age, our skin pH drifts higher and higher. A little help to keep the pH down will be welcomed by your skin.
4. MAINTAIN CALM AND REDUCE SENSITIVITY
Probiotic bacteria on the skin can communicate with your skin’s immune system to keep it in check so that it doesn’t overreact. The improvement of barrier function also prevents many toxins from penetrating the skin in the first place.
5. SLOW AGEING (HEALTHY SKIN AGES SLOWER)
We can’t stop the clock… but we can’t deny that if we treat skin badly, it will age faster. Probiotics help slow the signs of ageing by protecting your skin and by keeping your own immune response at bay. They have also been shown to reduce wrinkles and improve skin firmness and elasticity. Healthy skin ages slower.
SOME FACTORS THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE LOSS OF KEY MICROBIAL PARTNERS IN THE SKIN MICROBIOME
- Overuse of antibiotics
- High caesarean section rate
- Daily bathing in treated water
- Chemicals in cosmetic products
- Lack of contact with nature
- Inappropriate use of disinfectants
