About The Print
CREATURE NAME: Brain coral.
NATURAL HABITAT: Reefs in shallow water in the Indo-Pacific region.
DIMENSIONS: usually forms massive dome or boulder-shaped colonies which may be a metre or more in diameter; however, sometimes it forms flattened plates or it may be encrusting.
CURIOUS FACTS: It’s fluorescent with bright green glow under UV light. The polyps of P. daedalea expand at night to catch planktonic particles floating by. However, this coral obtains most of its nourishment from an algae called zooxanthellae it houses within its tissues.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: It’s a reef-building coral! Some reasons why coral reefs are so important: 30% of the marine biodiversity depends on them, they feed one billion people and protect coastlines from waves.
