CNY Spring Cleaning Tips for a Complete Home Detox

It’ll be Chinese New Year or CNY in less than two weeks. It’s a common tradition for every family not only in Hong Kong, but all over the world to be busy with spring cleaning, decluttering, and some much-needed home detox a week before CNY.

In Chinese culture, this ritual means that cleaning up and getting organized before the new year commences allows us to ‘sweep out the old to usher in the new.’ And what we want to achieve by undergoing a complete home detox is introducing the practice of minimalism into your life by actively decluttering, upgrading your essentials, and focusing your attention on items that “spark joy” if you’ve watched Marie Kondo’s Tidying Up. This approach helps you make way to see what truly matters in life and helps you create a space that you can share with the people you love.

This 2022 will be the year of the Tiger, and it’s important to do your spring cleaning immediately to enjoy good health and have lots of time for overall longevity and happiness.

Here are some spring cleaning tips to declutter your home for CNY for a complete home detox:

  1. Declutter to make room for new life

The first and most important step is to start by decluttering your own space, your home. An important tip is to pick items by category, not room.

Ask these two questions:

  • Do I need this?
  • Does it spark joy in my life?

If your answers are no, you can try recycling it or even better, donating it to people in need.

Try practicing “Danshari”. The Japanese believe “Danshari” helps people ditch a lifestyle focused on materialism and clears their mind to focus on your higher purpose in life.

  1. Donate your old household items

It wouldn’t be nice to throw a bag of clothing in a garbage bag and let it fall into a landfill in Hong Kong but instead while targeting a minimalist living style, give your used household items a second life. You can donate them instead. Doing so can spark joy for people in need!

  1. Dust off your furniture

After decluttering, it’s time to clean! The easiest out of all tasks is dusting. It’s essential to dust off your furniture from top to bottom. Start from the ceiling with a long-handled duster and work all the way down to the wall and the rest of the furniture.

  1. Sweep the floor

Sweeping is always done after dusting. It’s the most important procedure, as it is believed to be sweeping away the bad luck (represented by the dirt and dust) accumulated in your home over the past year. Or you can grab a vacuum cleaner to make it a whole lot easier.

  1. Clean the window with a newspaper

Make sure when you clean your windows, personal safety is a priority. After positioning yourself at a safe zone, soak a cloth in the soapy water and gently clean the windows from the inside, then what you can safely reach outside.

A newspaper can help clean your window. How? It’s the last step. It’s used to dry the window glass as the paper absorbs the watermark left on the glass, while the printed ink on the paper removes the greasy handprint on the window. The best part? Newspapers never scratch the glass.

  1. Last but not least – launder all of your beddings and linens (or replace them)

Everything should definitely be cleaned during this time of the year but don’t forget about your bedding and linens!

Is it time to upgrade your bedding and sheets for the new year?

Do you know that we spend 1/3 of our lifetime sleeping in bed?  The thing coming between you and a good night’s sleep might just be a thin layer of material between you and your mattress – your sheets!

Here are some visible signs that you need to replace or upgrade your bedding and sheets: when the fabric has lost its softness, cotton is pilling, noticeable stains, tears, or frayed edges. Over time, bedding naturally builds up bacteria from your sweat and skin cells, which may cause adverse reactions in some people.

A new bedding can offer you a clean and refreshing start to the new year. Have you heard about bamboo bedding and sheet? We would highly recommend Bamboo silk bedding because you can get so much out of it. It doesn’t only give comfort and a luxurious silky soft feeling but it’s cool and cozy, chemical-free, naturally hypoallergenic, and earth-friendly! That’s why we’re obsessed with it. You can choose from these leading brands Naked Lab, Ettitude, or Bamboa on our website.

Start the year right by a full home detox. Wishing you a prosperous Year of the Tiger, and good luck ushering in the new!
